Planning
Kenya’s north coast is easy to reach from Nairobi, by a short flight or a scenic train ride and drive. Here are your options.
The quickest way to Watamu and Malindi is to fly from Nairobi to Malindi Airport, about an hour. Several airlines fly the route every day. The airport is on the edge of Malindi, about 10 minutes from town and 30 minutes from Watamu by taxi or tuk-tuk.
Moi International Airport in Mombasa has more flights, including some international ones. From there, it is about 1½ hours by road to Kilifi and about 2½ hours to Watamu. Traffic in Mombasa can be heavy, so allow extra time.
The Madaraka Express runs between Nairobi and Mombasa in about five to six hours, through the plains of Tsavo, where you may see wildlife from the window. The Mombasa terminus is at Miritini, on the edge of the city, so arrange a transfer up the coast in advance. Book tickets ahead, especially at holiday times.
The coast road runs north from Mombasa over Mtwapa Creek, past Vipingo and Kilifi, to Watamu and Malindi. Shuttles and buses run up and down it many times a day, and matatus link all the towns.
