The best time to visit Watamu, Malindi and the Kilifi coast

  • 1 min read

The Kilifi coast is warm all year, with daytime temperatures around 28 to 32 °C. The seasons are set by two monsoon winds and two rainy seasons, and they make a big difference to the sea.

The short answer

For calm, clear water and sunshine, visit from December to March. For dry weather with fewer crowds, July to October is also good, though windier. The long rains from about April to June are the quietest and cheapest time.

Season by season

December to March: the north-east monsoon

Hot, humid and sunny, with light winds and calm, clear seas. The best time for snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year.

April to June: the long rains

Heavy showers, especially in May, and high humidity. Many smaller hotels close or offer low rates, and the sea can be cloudy, especially off Malindi.

July to October: the south-east monsoon

Dry, a little cooler and often breezy, with rougher seas and seaweed on some beaches. Humpback whales pass offshore, and it is a good time for kitesurfing.

November: the short rains

Usually short showers and warm sunshine in between.

Wildlife through the year

  • Whales: humpback whales are seen offshore from about July to October.
  • Migrant birds: waders arrive at Mida Creek from about September and stay until April.
  • Turtles: green turtles live on the reefs all year and nest on the beaches. Read about sea turtles and marine wildlife.
